I am a graduate student on a very tight budget, so before I purchased this netbook, I researched fairly extensively for quite some time. It's now three weeks since I purchased the ASUS 1001P, and I am completely happy with my decision.
Minor CONS
Screen--As with other netbooks, the most difficult part to adjust to is that the screen is definitely smaller than that of a laptop. It helps that the zoom controls are very accessible. And as others have said, I'm not sure why on this lovely matte laptop, the border of the screen is glossy; it would be better matte, I think.
Webcam--The webcam is only 0.3 megapixels, so it works fine but is certainly not very clear. The microphone is tolerable, but not outstanding.
Major PROS
Battery--Easily lasts at least nine hours, sometimes more if I have it in Power Saver mode.
Design--The subtle pattern on the white is lovely and keeps off fingerprints, and the seashell construction makes it look less clunky than other netbooks. It's even nicer than the pictures make it look.
Matte screen--I find this very useful in class because if sunshine comes in the windows or the lights are particularly high, I can see major glare on my other classmates' screens but mine is completely clear.
Speed--I upgraded to 2GB RAM, and it seems to work just fine. It certainly has not frozen at all yet. It is important to mention that I mainly use it for taking notes in class, writing papers, emailing, etc. I haven't used it extensively for watching video or playing games.
Keyboard--Does not feel too small at all. I do have small hands, so that helps, but I really have not experienced any difficulty adjusting.
Touchpad--Works well, no issues.
Optical Drive--I needed to get Office and a few other programs/drivers on this computer, so I ordered the very cheap 24x USB External CD-ROM CDROM Drive for ASUS EEE PC. It was loud and not very fast, but it worked fine for my purposes.
Windows 7--I came from XP to this 7 starter, and I have no complaints. It is sleek, simple, and intuitive. I feel no need to upgrade to Home Premium. (And as others have noted, you CAN change your desktop background.)
Weight--While it's not light as a feather, it is no heavier than any of the many textbooks I have to carry to school.
Overall, this is another great ASUS Eee PC, and I am very happy with my investment.

It's all about build quality
As netbooks have more or less standard hardware under the hood, netbooks can really only be distinguished by the parts that you the user interact with, namely, the screen, keyboard, and touchpad. I don't really have any complaints about the former and the latter. The screen has good contrast, but perhaps could be a little brighter. And, of course, it's matte, which is probably what drew you to this netbook in the first place (if you're anything like me). The touchpad is fine, no complaints.
Where the unit goes wrong is the keyboard. It is spongy. I very much dislike spongy, loud keyboards, but that is precisely what the 1001p has. Is it enough for me to put it on Ebay? No, but I am tempted to remove the case and see if I can add some reinforcements to make the tray more stable.
Cosmetically, it's basically what you expect. Looks decent, the seashell design is aesthetically pleasing, the pattern isn't garish. My only complaint on this end is the glossy bezel. I have no idea why it was necessary to put a fingerprint and dust magnet on an otherwise all matte netbook. But this is a quibble. The keyboard is the main fault.
Light weight Epc
Light wieght and easy to use. Only problem is the resolution of the images is 1024X600, not good enough for a lot of program.......A little slow at times......
